"Unlocking the Treasury" and other fine applications

Colm Toolan, Slingshot Business Unit Manager, is convinced that the power of Slingshot is limited only by the creativity of those charged with business development within the financial institutions. Those users who can recognise the opportunities associated with the combination of real-time data, exciting presentation techniques and global market outreach and who can apply these opportunities to create new applications and services will gain true competitive advantage, he says.

When I talk to the increasing number of Slingshot customers, the one thing that impresses me most is the diversity of applications and services that have already been built around the product's promise of Real-Time Publishing on the Internet. The applications are as diverse as the customers' view of themselves and of their marketplace.
Ulster Bank (http://www.ulsterbank.com), for instance, gained tremendous prestige and marketing advantage through their claim of being the first bank in the world to publish real-time prices directly from the trading room to the Internet.

vwd (http://www.vwd.de) used the technology to develop a whole new revenue stream and now host a multitude of real-time pages for the major German banks.
Aragon in Sweden (http://www.aragon.se) and Startel in Finland (http://www.startel.fi) have both enhanced their reputation by the addition of real-time market data to their web-site offerings.

One customer coined the phrase "Unlocking the Treasury" when asked to describe the value of Slingshot. "There is so much data, which previously has only been available to us Treasury folks" he said. "I know other people could gain from having access to that data. I don't know what use they will make of it, but with Slingshot I can make it available to them."

The more I think about it, the more I appreciate the validity of that statement. Within the dealing room we have always had the infrastructure and applications we needed to get the job done. There is probably only incremental value that we can expect from this or any other "paradigm shift". But consider these questions: How many people in the organisation gain value from or add value to the data that emerges from the dealing room? How many people deal with customers who would appreciate "anytime, anywhere" access to that data? Could the quality of services offered be improved by the addition of easy access, powerful presentation or the integration of related content?

So go talk to those Business Development people! My bet is that there are a wide range of applications and services, which are literally waiting for someone to unlock the treasury. And when you find them, remember - Slingshot is the key!
