With the implementation of the Bandwidth Server, Slingshot can support thousands of users in multiple locations

Large Scale Deployments and Security Issues Define Slingshot 1.6 Developments

Large-scale deployments involving greater numbers of end-users in multiple locations globally have dictated the new developments at the heart of Slingshot Version 1.6. As a result of growing demands among end-user institutions, the number of positions supported by the Slingshot Data Pump has been increased in this latest release to 1024. In addition, load sharing of multiple Data Pumps is supported. An even greater degree of user access permissioning has been enabled in the implementation of field content permissioning by the Slingshot Security Manager.

Central to Version 1.6 is the provision of the Bandwidth Server, which provides for an infrastructure that can support thousands of users in different locations around the world. It supports the efficient distribution of real-time data over a low capacity network, thus saving bandwidth and reducing connection costs. In addition, by bundling requests, it minimises the need for direct Internet connections and as a consequence provides enhanced security for user institutions.

Banks Attracted By Internet’s Real-Time Data Distribution Capabilities

While other industries see the Internet as a new medium to advertise and sell their services, banks and other financial institutions are increasingly attracted by the network’s central characteristic – its ability to distribute data.

Traditionally, financial and trading institutions have had two choices when it came to distributing mission critical data – either use the proprietary systems, or build their own distribution network – both extremely costly. The advent of the Internet however, has provided institutions with a third option: an infrastructure across which their market data can be distributed.

Working to capitalise on this potential, CSK Software developed Slingshot – Real Time Publishing on The Internet.
Slingshot was developed specifically for the financial markets. All of the environmental variables of that market and the critical functionality were taken into account throughout its design and development.
Since its launch in September 1996, approximately 30 institutions – from stock exchanges to brokerages – have taken advantage of the Internet in this way – to distribute their market data to thousands of positions, either via the public Internet or across their private intranets.
